• Where the car lives. A garaged vehicle ages far more slowly than one parked in full sun daily. UV is the single biggest environmental factor in Australia, and it works on the coating every hour the car sits outside.
• How you wash it. Automatic brush washes and dirty wash mitts wear a coating down from the top. This is the most common cause of early failure we see, and it is entirely avoidable.
• What sits on the paint. Bird droppings, sap and bug residue are acidic. The coating resists them, but a week baking in the sun still takes a toll on the surface.
• Coastal and industrial exposure. Salt air and airborne fallout settle constantly and keep working at the surface between washes. Coastal vehicles need decontamination more often than inland ones.
• Kilometres and road type. A car covering highway distance meets more road film, tar and grit than one doing short suburban trips, and that abrasion adds up.
• Paint colour and condition. Softer paints and darker colours show wear earlier, so a coating on black paint often looks tired before an identical one on silver.
• Whether it gets serviced. A coating decontaminated and topped up each year holds performance far longer than one left alone. This is the factor owners most often overlook.

• Wax: weeks. A sacrificial layer sitting on the paint that heat, detergent and rain strip away.
• Paint sealant: three to six months. More durable than wax, but never reaching the hardness of a real coating.
• Entry level coating: one to two years. A genuine step up, and the tier most consumer kits sit in.
• Mid range professional: three to five years. The sensible middle ground for a daily driver.

• Wash every two to three weeks. Regular safe washing extends a coating’s life, because contamination is removed before it can bond and etch.
• Use the two bucket method. One bucket for soapy water, one for rinsing the mitt, with grit guards in both. Wash top down so the dirtiest panels come last.
• Choose pH neutral shampoo. Harsh detergents strip the surface and shorten the hydrophobic life of the coating.
• Remove droppings and sap quickly. Within a day or two, not next weekend. Acid plus a hot panel is where etching starts.
• Dry with a clean microfibre or blower. Letting hard water evaporate on the panel leaves mineral spotting that etches in over time.
• Book the annual service. A decontamination and booster coating each year is the single most effective thing you can do.

Avoid this

• Automatic brush car washes. The fastest way to mark any protected surface, and the most common reason a coating underperforms.
• Washing in direct sun. Water and soap dry on the panel before you can rinse, leaving spotting behind.
• Waxing over the top. It masks the hydrophobic performance you paid for and has to be stripped before a booster can bond.
• Reusing a dropped wash mitt. It picks up grit from the ground and drags it across your paint on the next panel.
• Polishing compounds. Anything abrasive removes coating. If the finish looks tired, have it inspected rather than attacking it.

• Product ceiling. Retail kits generally sit in the entry level tier, so even a flawless application starts from one to two years.
• Preparation. Machine polishing needs equipment and practice. Without it you seal existing defects in permanently.
• Environment. Dust, wind and temperature swings in a driveway all affect how a coating flashes and cures.
• High spots. Coating left too thick or buffed unevenly leaves streaking that must be polished back out, taking coating with it.
• Recourse. A professional install carries a warranty tied to the product and an installer who has to stand behind it.

How long does ceramic coating last on a daily driver?

A premium coating on a daily driver that is washed correctly and serviced annually will typically run five years or more. A car parked outside full time and put through automatic brush washes will get considerably less from the same product.

How do I know when a coating is wearing out?

Water is the giveaway. On a healthy coating, water pulls into tight beads and sheets off. As it wears, the beads flatten and spread, the car stops staying clean between washes, and the surface feels less slick. An inspection confirms it either way.

Can a ceramic coating be topped up?

Does a coating last longer on a new car?
