What Is Car Paint Protection?

Car paint protection is a category rather than a single product. It covers everything applied to a vehicle's exterior to slow down the damage that would otherwise reach the factory paint, and the right answer is almost always a combination rather than one item off a list.

Modern paint is thinner than most owners assume. The clear coat doing all the protective work measures a fraction of a millimetre, and once UV, acidic contamination or stone impact gets through it, the only remedy is polishing away more of what remains or repainting the panel.

Paint protection works by putting something else in the firing line. A ceramic coating bonds chemically to the clear coat and defends against UV, contamination and etching. Paint protection film sits on top as a physical barrier and absorbs impact. Paint correction restores the surface before either goes on.

The three products that matter

  • Ceramic coating for UV, chemical and gloss protection
  • Paint protection film for stone chips and physical impact
  • Paint correction to prepare the surface properly
  • Ongoing maintenance to keep all of it performing

Benefits of Paint Protection Film (PPF)

Paint protection film is the only product that genuinely stops stone chips, which is why it goes on the panels that face the road. It is a thick, clear thermoplastic urethane laminate: a self healing top coat, an energy absorbing urethane body, and an adhesive engineered to release cleanly years later.

A stone chip is not merely cosmetic. It breaks the clear coat and the colour layer, exposing primer or bare metal, and that is where corrosion begins several years down the track. Film stops that happening at all.

What film delivers

  • Absorbs stone chips and road debris
  • Self healing top coat closes light scratches with heat
  • Blocks bug acid and bird droppings from reaching paint
  • Virtually invisible when installed properly
  • Preserves original factory paint at resale

Ceramic Coating vs PPF

These two get compared constantly, but they are not competitors. They solve different problems, and once that is clear the decision usually makes itself.

A coating is chemical and microscopically thin. It follows the paint exactly, covers the whole vehicle, and delivers the hydrophobic surface that makes washing quicker. Film is physical and substantial. It covers selected panels and absorbs impact that a coating cannot.

The most complete setup is both: film across the high impact front end, and a coating over the top and across the rest of the vehicle. That combination is what most of our long term customers end up running.

The short version

  • Only film stops stone chips
  • Only a coating covers every panel affordably
  • A coating makes washing dramatically easier
  • Film can be applied under a coating
  • Both require correct preparation first

Our Paint Protection Process

Every vehicle follows the same sequence regardless of which products it receives, because the preparation is what determines whether the result lasts five years or fifteen months.

Work is carried out in enclosed, controlled workshops rather than a driveway or a shared bay, which is what keeps airborne contamination out of the finish. Every vehicle is inspected under specialist lighting before it is handed back.

Paint Protection Pricing

Two quotes for the same car can differ by a thousand dollars, and the gap is rarely the product. It is the hours of preparation happening before anything is applied, and the tier of product being used.

We quote every vehicle individually after an assessment, because the condition of your paint is the largest variable and nobody can judge it from a phone call. The consultation is free, includes a workshop tour, and ends with an itemised quote rather than a ballpark figure.

What moves the number

  • Preparation hours and correction stages required
  • Vehicle size and total panel area
  • Product tier, from sealant through to premium coating
  • Film coverage level, from partial front to full body
  • Additional surfaces such as wheels, glass and interior

Four Steps To A Protected Vehicle

No surprises, and nothing starts until you have approved an itemised quote for your vehicle.

01

Free Consultation

We assess the paint under specialist lighting to identify swirl marks, etching and bonded contamination, then recommend the products your vehicle actually needs.

02

Decontamination and Correction

A full decontamination wash, iron fallout and tar removal, clay bar treatment, then machine polishing matched to the condition of your paint.

03

Application

Coating or film is applied in an enclosed workshop under controlled conditions, with correct flash and cure times observed at every stage.

04

Inspection and Aftercare

Every panel is checked under specialist lighting before handover. We walk you through aftercare and book your first annual service.

Andrew's Car Care Plan is included. Every coating we apply comes with a free annual decontamination wash, paint inspection and booster coating for the life of the coating. It takes around an hour and it is the single most effective thing you can do to extend the working life of your protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions we are asked most about automotive paint protection. If yours is not here, call us on 1300 300 100.

What is the difference between ceramic coating and paint protection film?

A coating is chemical. It bonds to the paint and defends against UV, contamination and etching across the whole vehicle while making washing far easier. Film is physical. It is a thick urethane film that absorbs stone chips and impact on the panels it covers. Many owners run film on the front end with a coating over everything else.

How much does paint protection cost?

Every vehicle is quoted individually, because the biggest variable is the condition of your paint rather than the product itself. Vehicle size matters too. The consultation is free, includes a workshop tour, and ends with an itemised quote for your actual car. This is not a market to compare on price alone, and the value sits in the preparation.

Does my paint need correcting first?

On most vehicles, yes. Coatings and film both seal in whatever is underneath them, so any swirl marks, scratches or contamination present at application stay there. We assess every vehicle and correct only what needs correcting. If a quote you have received does not mention preparation, ask why.

How long does paint protection last?

It depends on the product tier. A wax lasts weeks and a sealant three to six months. Entry level coatings give one to two years, mid range products three to five, and the premium GTechniq and Kovalent systems we use are engineered for five years or more with proper care. Quality film can run five to ten years.

Do you offer a loan car?
